Rose Bloom in Spring Sunshine
This was way too easy for Bonnyrigg Rose as they brushed aside a poor Broughty Athletic team on a warm afternoon at New Dundas Park. The home side scored before the quarter hour and had five before the break. The second period was a non event as Broughty ( reduced to ten men with over 30 minutes to play) tightened up considerably and the home side took their foot of the gas with the points secured.
McBookie.com East Super League leaders Bonnyrigg Rose played host to sixth played Broughty Athletic in the latest round of fixtures. Rose lead the table by four points over Linlithgow Rose and can’t afford any slip ups if they are to be crowned champions again before they leave to join the East of Scotland League. The sides met earlier in the season and played out a no scoring draw in the Ferry. Rose won both fixtures last season comfortably. Broughty are enjoying a decent season although they have lost ten times in the league. They have no further interests in the cups so after today have only two games remaining. Bonnyrigg are still firing on all fronts and have a great chance of completing a treble.
Rose were straight onto the attack and Young fired over after three minutes from just outside the box. They then won a free kick after 5 minutes but Currie’s effort deflected off the defensive wall for a corner. From the kick Stewart tried an audacious volley and when the ball broke to McIntosh he shot over. Rose won another free kick minutes later. Currie delivered a great cross which Young headed over. In Rose’s next attack Martyniuk shot just past. A goal had to come and after 13 minutes it arrived. McIntosh chased a through ball and as he rounded Sinclair in the Athletic goal, the keeper brought him down. A stone wall penalty and Referee Duncan Smith agreed. MARTYNIUK stepped up and gave Sinclair no chance.
Rose continued to dominate and Athletic were never in at as an attacking force. After 20 minutes the home side doubled their lead. Currie swung in another accurate cross and BRETT headed home - a goal for each fullback!
After 27 minutes the home side virtually secured the points. This time WILSON was on the end of the through ball. Sinclair couldn’t touch the striker who rounded him and squeezed his shot home from a tight angle.
Two minutes later and a fourth different Rose player was on the scoresheet. This time the cross was provided by Turner after inter passing amongst the Rose players and MCGACHIE headed home - half an hour played and four goals for Bonnyrigg.
Rose then won a couple of corners which Athletic managed to defend before the visitors won a corner in what was almost their first foray into Rose territory. Clark swung over the corner and McGachie headed the ball clear. As the ball dropped about 25 yards out Winter smashed in a terrific volley, which cannoned back of the crossbar.
With 37 minutes played Turner broke well for Rose, he fed Currie in on the right. The free kick expert tried to chip Sinclair but it was easy for the keeper.
The delay in the goal rush was only temporary and after 42 minutes Rose had their fifth. The Rose team played the ball around up front and eventually played in WILSON who got his own second.
The score line hardly reflected Rose’s total domination. Broughty were never in it and must have been dreading the second forty five minutes.
