Rose Hit Six As They Stroll to Three More Points
Bonnyrigg Rose went one better than last Saturday as they put six goals past a Jeanfield Swifts team, who never looked likely to cause an upset after the home team opened their account in the second minute. Rose dominated the game totally and although Swifts hit the woodwork after the break and had a few efforts on goal, it was always a question of how many goals the home side would score. Rose also had the added bonus of welcoming two key players back after injury and the introduction of club captain Jonny Stewart brought a large cheer from the home support.
McBookie.com East Super League Bonnyrigg Rose welcomed Jeanfield Swifts from Perth, to New Dundas Park for a league encounter today. Rose are unbeaten in the league this term and went top last Saturday after a comfortable five goals to one victory over Kennoway Star Hearts. Swifts sit eleventh in the table just above the relegation places and have not played a competitive fixture since early December. When the sides met in the league in September at the Riverside Stadium, Rose won comfortably by four goals to one.
There was a decent crowd in attendance on a cold afternoon and they’d hardly settled before Rose opened the scoring. Martyniuk played a forward ball into the left side of the box, McIntosh sent it across goal with the visitors claiming offside, before GRAY was on hand to slide the ball home. It was frightening for Swifts how easily their defence was opened up and notice of what was to come.
Swifts took a while to get going but they were trying to pass the ball along the ground and play football. After 10 minutes their perseverance was rewarded with a corner but it came to nothing. However, after less than a quarter of an hour they found themselves two down. K Young launched a long ball down field and MCINTOSH was onto it before slipping it past the helpless Mitchell in the visitors goal.
Jeanfield eventually got a shot on goal after 18 minutes but Davies shot wide.
Rose continued to look dangerous and Deans did well to block a McIntosh shot after 20 minutes. However, the third goal was only delayed temporarily. The home side won a free kick on the right and from the best part of 30 yards CURRIE curled a sublime shot past a helpless Mitchell - it was a superb finish not the postage stamp corner. On the half hour Martyniuk tried a shot from distance but it was well wide.
After 33 minutes, Jeanfield were given a half chance when a defender slipped but Davies couldn’t test Young in the home goal.
On 39 minutes Rose added a fourth. They kept possession well, playing some nice football around the edge of the box before BRETT shot low into the corner. 4-0 and game over!
Swifts were glad to hear the half time whistle as they were struggling against a much better side and seldom causing the home defence any problems.
Half Time Bonnyrigg Rose 4; Jeanfield Swifts 0
No changes at the break and Rose were straight into the attack winning a corner before a good pass from Gray found Lough, who brought out a good stop from Mitchell.
After 51 minutes the visitors had their best moment. Mcdermid sent in a great curling effort from the left which struck the junction of cross bar and post with Young struggling.
Rose’s response was a Martyniuk volley well saved by Mitchell before a good Davies shot brought Young into action at the other end.
Both sides made changes as the hour approached with Rose withdrawing Lough and Janczyk to be replaced by McGachie and Hoskins. Jeanfield introduced Holt for Anton.
Jeanfield were certainly more in the game in the second half and both Kelly and another Substitute McKenzie had shots which went over.
After 65 minutes, McGachie made a great run down the left and despite Deans’ best effort to upend him, he nearly got in at the post before his shot was blocked. Good refereeing here by George Calder who played advantage before booking Deans a few minutes later for his lunge at McGachie. McGachie was proving a handful and was nearly through after 70 minutes. However, with 71 minutes played, MCGACHIE got his goal. Substitute Hoskins found Gray on the left and the big striker was on hand to slam his cross past the helpless Mitchell from close range.
With 78 minutes played the scoring was completed. Rose produced some intricate play on the right involving Brett and Currie and when the latter played BRETT in, his shot was deflected past Mitchell by a defender.
There was no more goalmouth action after that but Rose brought on Stewart to see his first competitive action in months.
This was a one sided game with Jeanfield probably suffering from a lack of competitive action. Rose got the early goal and settled well before playing some good possession football and their finishing was excellent. Gray was a busy player and K Young solid at the back. Jeanfield will be better for the outing but need to improve if they are to trouble Beith next week. However, they play a good brand of football and will enjoy more productive afternoons.
Next Week Bonnyrigg host local rivals Newtongrange Star in the fourth round of the Scottish Junior Cup while Jeanfield face another huge challenge against Beith Juniors in the same competition.
