Musselburgh had Penicuik under pressure from the kick off winning three consecutive corner kicks in the opening minutes, all of which were well defended by the visitors. In the 4th minute, Ross sent a deep cross to the back post that beat Christie, but Montgomery’s first time volley went just wide of the upright. Five minutes later, a cross by Gay had keeper Jackson at full stretch to tip the ball away. From the throw in Jancyzk saw his left foot volley flash just wide of the target. In the 16th minute, another great ball by Gay picked out Jancyzk, but his volley went high over the bar. In the 28th minute, following Musselburgh’s seventh corner of the game, Thomson laid the ball back to the edge of the box where McLeish hit a tremendous shot that brought out a fantastic save by Bejaoui and the danger was cleared. Ten minutes later, a Thomson free kick from just outside the Penicuik box was curled high over the bar. In their next attack, the ball was chipped over Bejaoui, but white was there to head the ball away before it crossed the line. In the 35th minute, a ball over the top of the defence caught out Penicuik but Bejaoui stood tall and denied Jamieson who tried to chip the ball over the big keeper. One minute later, another great cross to the back post picked out MONTGOMERY. His first time effort was blocked, but he made no mistake with the rebound. Musselburgh equalised in the 41st minute while both McDermott and Jancyzk were remonstrating with the stand side assistant over a throw in, Thomson drifted away from them to the bye line totally unmarked only to see his shot hit the base of the far post. However, MARTIN was on hand to slam home the rebound.
Half time: Musselburgh 1 Penicuik 1
In the opening minute of the second half, a Penicuik corner kick to the back post was headed back across goal and headed back in, but Hamilton headed the ball off the goal line. In the 49th minute, Penicuik regained the lead when BARR slotted home a Montgomery pass. Ten minutes later a Gay corner kick was missed by everyone and flashed inches wide of the far post. Penicuik should have put the game to bed shortly afterwards when Gay was set free with only Jackson to beat, but both Gay’s efforts were blocked and the opportunity was lost. In the 72nd minute, a dazzling run but Somerville ended with a left foot strike that went well wide of the target. In the 80th minute, a fine move by Penicuik saw Somerville cut across the box and lay the ball back to BARR 25 yards out from where he smashed a screamer of a shot into the top corner of the net giving Jackson no chance – a goal worthy of winning any game and no doubt will be a contender for Penicuik’s goal of the season. Two minutes later, a Cunnison cross to the back post was sliced wide by Montgomery. In the 86th minute another fine move by Penicuik saw substitute Mitchell set up Montgomery, but this time his effort went high over the bar. One minute into injury time and a cross from the wing was only partially cleared to MARTIN who slammed the ball first time through a ruck of players into the net.
