Manager Phil McGuire can tick off the first box on his list of achievements for season 2014/15 as United completed August unbeaten after a 4-2 win over Fife rivals Glenrothes at The Parkk on Saturday afternoon
It is beginning to sound like a broken record but McGuire was forced in to changes from the side that had beaten Montrose Roselea last week. New signing Gavin Sorley was given a debut between the sticks while Kevin McMullan came in for the injured Darren Kelly and Kamil Kadela replaced Sam Buchan on holiday. Robbie Holden was able to start following the birth of his son during the week.
Saints have a habit of starting games quickly but nobody really expected United to take the lead inside two minutes. A Daryn Smith corner found the head of Jamie Mackie and all the defender on the line could do was help the ball in to the net. It was nearly 2-0 after 5 minutes as Holden beat his man on the left before cutting in to the box he squared the ball to the unmarked Sibanda but from somewhere came Gavim Moffat to block the ball for a corner. That was Holdens last piece of action as he had to be replaced by Liam Campbell. Sorley was called in to his first bit of action on 15 minutes when he pulled off a great save from Napier. Craig Wallace then watched a header go inches wide of the post as the visitors refused to be overawed. However, that was all unravelled on 24 minutes when Moffat left a backpass short of the keeper and Sibanda nipped in took the ball round the keeper and slid the ball home. Sorely was called on again to make a good save from Martin who caused the Saints defence quite a few problems. Glens managed to pull one back on 36 minutes when Sorley came for a cross but was beaten by Martin who nodded the ball home. Saints restored their two goal advantage on 40 minutes when Wallace was penalised for handball much to the annoyance of Glenrothes. None of that bothered Sibanda as he sent Gay the wrong way from the spot to make it 3-1. Aidan Anderson found himself booked for his continued protestations to the referee as play continued. Just before half time John Martin found himself booked for simulation after throwing himself down to the floor.
Saints were content to sit back and see how the visitors would react to half time . Jamie Gay lost McMullan on the United left but Dobie was there to clear the danger all be it for a corner. Uniteds fourth came on the hour as a superb inch perfect through ball from McInnes found Sibanda who ran on and slammed the ball past Chris Gay in the visitors goal, Glenrothes pulled a second goal back on 65 when Martin beat McMullan and then squared the ball to Griffin who slid the ball back across Sorley in to the far corner. At this point Saints decide that enough was enough and saw out the remainder of the half to secure the win and the points. Glenrothes saw a free kick come back off the inside of the post on 77 minutes and Gay hit the side netting a minute later. Kadela had a chance on 88 but copied Gay and saw his shot hit the side netting.
