Report from the Scone Thistle

Scone travelled to Lochore hoping to continue the great play they had shown against Blairgowrie last weekend but were dealt a blow when Doig was ruled out via injury.  Thankfully Ross Mitchell was available following his suspension and there was a call up from the 1998's of Stewart Thomson who was listed as a trialist substitute.

The Jags were put on the back foot straight from kick off by Welfare's pacey direct play. In fact the hosts created their first chance of the game after only three minutes when Wallace took the ball down the right wing and his attempt to pass Lafferty was partially blocked by the Jags' defender and fell to Scott Ballingall who cleared the ball only as far as 8 he then fired the ball goalwards but found Curtis equal to the shot and the ball was held.

90 second later Lochore pressed again when a throw on the right was taken to Wallace and he managed to get past Kyle Ballingall before firing a shot just past the post.

The hosts' third chance in a hectic opening period came after 7 minutes following a foul by Laing on Wallace.  Penman played the ball into the box and MacLeod had to look lively to clear the ball for a corner with Reid waiting to header the ball into goal at the far post.

Scone were then dealt a blow when Jamie Ayton was involved in an accidental collision with one the Lochore players which left Jamie with an injured hand.  He came off to be replaced by Jordan Brown and it later transpired that Jamie had actually suffered a broken hand - the best wishes of all at the Jaggies go to Jamie for a speedy recovery.

There was 14 minutes on the clock when Curtis saved Scone from almost certainly going behind with a double save.  The ball was played into the edge of the box to Wallace and his delicate touch carried it goalwards and wrong footed Curtis in the process and so he wasn't able to get a clean grasp of the shot which spun backwards towards Goodwin.  Thankfully however Curtis was able to recover and whilst lying on the ground punch the ball away from Goodwin's foot and eventually the ball was cleared.

Scone were slowly getting back into the game and were beginning to string some good passing moves via the midfield and one of these led to the Jags' first chance of the match after 20 minutes.   Good play up the left between Lafferty, Craig Mitchell and Kyle Ballingall allowed the latter to centre the ball to Dudek and his left foot effort was curling into the far corner until Inglis managed to get down to hold the ball.

Just when it looked like Scone had weather the storm in 23 minutes they went behind to a Reid penalty after Laing had fouled Ferguson when the Lochore man had nipped the ball off the toes of Lafferty and took it into the penalty area.

Jags responded quickly and after only a further 4 minutes almost hit back when Scott Ballingall took a throw in on the right to Brown and between the two players a good serious of 1-2s allowed the ball to be slipped through the defence to Hynd who beat the offside trap to go through on goal but his final shot was over the bar.

Lafferty, Ross Mitchell and Craig Mitchell all came close with efforts as the first half drew to a close but were either off target or Inglis was equal to the task and the scoreline remained 1-0 at the break.

Scone started the second half brightly and captain Willie Laing decided to show the route to goal taking the ball out of defence and playing a 1-2 with Kyle Ballingall just inside the Lochore half before crossing from the outside right position to Kyle who had made a back post run, he in turn laid the ball down to Lafferty who crossed into the goal mouth from the edge of the box, the ball beat the keeper but before Ross Mitchell could pounce the ball was cleared for a corner.  When the corner was swung in Kyle Ballingall was unlucky to see his shot just go past the back post.

After 68 minutes there were chances at both ends of the pitch for the teams when firstly a Lochore corner was headed off the post by 5 and when the ball was cleared by MacLeod to Robertson he took the ball to the edge of the area and passed the ball back to Scott Ballingall and when he worked the ball into the centre to Craig Mitchell his shot was just off target.

Scone were to pay the penalty for not converting their chances when Lochore doubled their lead after 71 minutes when a long diagonal ball from defence by Byrne was gathered by Penman and he cut inside Scott Ballingall before hitting an unstoppable shot past Curtis from the edge of the area.

Wallace and Penman came close to adding to the hosts' tally as the game drew to a close and it was a game that Scone will be disappointed with as they only showed in flashed what they are really capable of.  A free week next week before Newburgh come to Farquharson Park for the last home match of the season on Friday 16th May.
